Healing Within - Remastered - CD
Lori Anne Williams, called a "dynamic presence" (JazzTimes), releases her remastered debut CD, Healing Within. (originally distributed in 2010).From the earthy, luscious version of the Freddie Hubbard composition “Little Sunflower” (with original lyrics penned by Williams), to a smoky, heartfelt remake of the Bonnie Raitt classic, "I Can't Make You Love Me," Lori Williams dazzles with her vocal beauty, precision and creative improvisations on each song.
Healing Within - CD
"Lori A. Williams is a lot more than just a singer, songwriter, and performer. If you were to judge her on these things alone, you would have to conclude you where dealing with one of the finest artists of our era, an eventual legend and, I have no doubt, time will prove me right. I think music aficionados who listen to this project will agree that these tracks step her toward this destiny. Let me add a little fuel to this fire. Lori's lead vocal recording is all original - no vocal overdubs, no re-tracking, and almost no vocal fixes (come on... no one is perfect). When we recorded the material, I had her record "scratch vocals" with the intent of throwing them out and recording the REAL lead vocals later (as is customary). Well, that's NOT what happened... you are listening to the unaltered scratch vocal. Now I don't mean to insult anyone's intelligence; but everything we listen to these days has been altered, fixed, produced, tracked, squeezed, tuned and composited TO DEATH!! NOT this recording. This is the real deal; and that makes this recording astounding because even if all the usual stuff was done, it would be a great CD. The honesty of this recording moves it into the amazing column. Not only is the lead vocal honest, but so is the rest of the recording. In fact, it's only a hair away from being totally live. Many songs are the first take.
Now remember, I said that Lori is more than a singer, songwriter, and performer, because as we approached the end of the project, I started to realize her tremendous gift as a producer. Lori's lack of ego, and a willingness to recognize other peoples' abilities, and trust in both herself and those she works with, is a gift rarely seen. Not only does she have a voice and performance talent similar to a Judy Garland, but if she keeps producing recordings, she might also be compared to Quincy Jones. I could go on and on particularly concerning Lori's production capabilities, but lets just say that she is completely unaware of her ability... Like a duck to water, effortless and commanding. These traits show up in the product.
After saying all this, I think the music says it better than I can; but the listeners need to know the circumstances behind this recording. It makes it all the more awesome."

Lori Williams ~ Eclipse of the Soul (Remastered)
Originally released in 2012 at Studio 51 in Dunkirk, Maryland, Eclipse of the Soul is back and better than ever. Experience the magic of Lori Williams's transformative music in this remastered edition.
Critical Acclaim: "In the ever-crowded field of aspiring jazz vocalists, it is always such a pleasure to encounter an emerging artist who stands out in the crowd. Lori Williams is one such artist deserving of your attention. With 'Eclipse of the Soul,' Lori Williams has come out on the other side of that pathos, clear of mind, bursting with spirit, and delivering her music with a lovely smile. One of the hallmarks of this record is Lori’s programmatic range. Not intent to simply lay down a series of standards with typical piano-bass-drums jazz date accompaniment, she mixes her partners, engaging the cream of the DC area’s rich jazz crop to assist her, and warmly welcomes her children onto the date. One comes away from 'Eclipse of the Soul' rewarded by the obviously upward arc of Lori Williams' artistic development, and mightily impressed at her programmatic skills as well. Here's a singer who is definitely on the rise." - Willard Jenkins (2024 NEA Jazz Master)

Full Circle - CD
"Lori Williams has a rich voice, able to take it to a wisp or get strong on this collection of thoughtful covers. She’s with a core team of Allyn Johnson/p-key, Carrol Dashiell, III/dr, Kris Funn/b and rotates around with Antonio Parker/sax, Stanley Cooper/g and Tracey Cutler/sax. She and Cutler’s alto team with a soulful keyboard take of “My Funny Valentine” while she gets folksy with Cooper and some strings on a wistful “Turn, Turn, Turn.” Most intriguing is a gospel drenched read of Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday” that gets deep into some R&B for the climax, with a New Orleans vibe for a festive “Auld Lang Syne” not far behind. Most intimate is a recording of her and her (late) dad (Robert Williams) a church deacon, teaming together for a tender read of “The Best Is Yet To Come,” not the standard, but a personal original. This gal has some great ideas, and like “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” she can surprise you with changes of pulses, sounds and dynamics. Creative and alluring." - JazzWeekly.com

📀About the Album: An American singer, a European band: this constellation suggests a familiar principle. It has been common practice in jazz for ages for artists from the States to look for an accompanying group for performances or recordings in Europe. However, the case is different here; the story behind "Here We Are" does not fit into this scheme at all. The sextet around vocalist and songwriter Lori Williams from the States has been a proven collective for years. "A community that I have learned to appreciate and love as a family!" Williams praised her co-musicians with a radiant smile.. When she talks about saxophonist Bernhard Wiesinger, guitarist Christian Havel and the others, she also talks about them as her brothers. "And I'm a sister to all the guys in the band!" she added, laughing. "This group has become my home away from home."
The fact that something special has to be behind the first joint album can already be concluded by a look at the songs. Sure: "My Romance" is a standard. And: "Here We Are" ends with a touching version of James Taylor's classic song "Fire and Rain". Otherwise, there are own pieces on the program, composed by the musicians and most with lyrics by Lori Williams. The multi-talented American hails from Washington DC . She has also released a number of her own albums over the course of her career of three decades. She wrote the lyrics for many songs.
Williams grew up with music. She already sang in the church when she was in preschool. Music was omnipresent in her home, especially gospel, which her parents encouraged. Lori Williams discovered jazz in college, where she soon designed the radio station's jazz program. She met one of her great heroines there, the vocal luminary Dianne Reeves, for the first time. She also took her passion for jazz to Hampton University in Virginia. After that, she went to Japan for five years. Williams conducted a gospel choir there, among other things. And she met another brilliant role model, singer and songwriter Abbey Lincoln. Back in Washington D.C., Lori Williams accepted a job as a teacher since she had to work as the breadwinner for her family. In addition, she pursued her musical career to the extent that was possible. She performed, made contacts, and soon became a busy singer who knew how to move confidently between jazz, soul and gospel. She eventually left her job in the school system. Today, she focuses largely on her artistic side, giving concerts and teaching singing, including in workshops.
The connection to her colleagues from Austria goes back to an offer she received out of the blue in 2012. Saxophonist and flutist Bernhard Wiesinger had come across Lori Williams on the internet. Wiesinger, born in 1981, had long since gained an excellent reputation in the wider field of jazz in Vienna, his birthplace. He has long been regarded as one of Austria's outstanding jazz personalities. He has recorded his excellent albums "Enlightened" and "Notice That Moment" (both on Double Moon) in New York with awesome musicians such as Bill Stewart, Scott Colley, Peter Bernstein and Kevin Hays. In 2010, Wiesinger took over management of the "Jazzwerkstatt Poysdorf" association, which had made the small town north of Vienna a recognized jazz venue in Austria. The summer workshop and concert series "Poysdorf Jazz & Wine" took place this year for the 25th time. Once again in the instructor team: Lori Williams, Bernhard Wiesinger and guitarist Christian Havel. When Wiesinger first invited the American singer, whose vocals inspired him, to "Jazz & Wine" in 2012, she didn’t hesitate to accept. "That sounded just cool, and I spontaneously embarked on the adventure." The trip to Lower Austria became a revelation, and helped her to become part of a new musical family. “It just turned out to be a fantastic encounter. It clicked! It just had a great vibe“. It doesn't sound much different from Wiesinger's point of view. "It was a kind of love at first sight. It is very much a matter of common chemistry. And we felt it immediately." While Lori Williams was initially only intended as a workshop lecturer, many similarities soon became apparent during sessions and in more intensive exchanges.
Since 2012, Lori Williams has returned to Poysdorf every summer, except for two years. One song that is firmly part of the repertoire of the lecturer band is "My Romance". The standard became a core piece of musical team building activities. In 2016 Williams, Wiesinger and Havel were together in the studio for the first time on the occasion of the production of an album by Christian Havel. Later, recordings of the entire workshop band were made, but they were never released due to problems on the part of the company involved. This fueled the desire to finally release an official album. After all, the well-rehearsed team had also become a tour band, completely independent of the Poysdorf event.
"Here We Are" underlines what a good instinct Wiesinger had when he first contacted Lori Williams. The American with a warm voice is a technically brilliant vocalist and a wonderfully expressive song interpreter. A discovery for many, without a doubt! You can hear that the pieces were developed together, and they have also proven their quality in live performances. The Brazilian touch, which repeatedly appears as style and color, is thanks to Christian Havel and pianist Renato Chicco. Wiesinger emphasized: “We are a collective. Everyone contributes something. There are no overinflated egos; it's not about 'see what I can do!', it's about music. You can hear this spirit. Of course, Lori is the main character, but we act on an equal footing.” And Williams added: "You can really feel genuine emotions," which are also triggered by her lyrics. The songs on "Here We Are" have a positive, uplifting charisma, starting with the title track, the spiritual center of this magnificent album.
